Leeds Foe is against fracking and believes the government should invest in clean and proven sources of energy such as wind and solar.
Fracking poses risks to the environment and public health which include potential leaking of toxic chemicals into drinking water. Drilling for shale gas in the Fylde area of Lancashire has already caused small earthquakes.
Leeds Foe is currently working with Frack Free Leeds to lobby Leeds City Council to secure a year-long moratorium on fracking (including gas extracted from coal seams, a potential threat to ex-mining areas of the city) until the activity can be scientifically proved to be safe.
A full briefing on fracking can be found here –http://www.foe.co.uk/sites/default/files/downloads/shale_gas.pdf .
